Are pole signs making a comeback?

A pole sign in Midtown. These signs are now illegal and must be removed before October 1, 2006. Dick Traini and Dan Sullivan recently announced they will introduce an ordinance legalizing pole signs and allowing them to remain in place, forever.

But how on earth will anyone know where Wal-Mart is, or the Anchorage Baptist Temple, or that parking place by the airport? It is impossible to know where these places are without massive signage.

Signage gives economic benefit to the owner at the expense of every citizen in the community. Citizens that bear this expense do not have the choice to turn it off as they do with a newspaper, TV, or Radio. Our public regulations provide a format for the public to establish the balancing point of the owners benefit and the public's tolerance for the signs. Citizens have worked hard to put that balance in to the new sign ordinance with many compromises on both sides. This proposal should be rejected before it risks wasting public time and adding to the citizen's expense of these signs.

I guess it wasn't clear that I was KIDDING. I don't want Anchorage to look like everywhere else, and if that means smaller signs, I'm all for it.

Sheesh.
